Il entre à l'âge de 15 ans au service d'une entreprise de pompes funèbres à Dijon, où il apprend les rudiments de la sculpture. Il fréquente le soir l'École des Beaux Arts. Parti cinq ans plus tard pour Paris, il continue de travailler dans la journée pour un entrepreneur de pompes funèbres, à Montparnasse, et se rend le soir à l'École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs. Il travaille plus tard aux nouveaux ornements de l'Hôtel de Ville, incendié au moment de la Commune.
